General Questions
Why is this campaign needed?
This campaign comes at a pivotal time. A recent childcare study by the Watauga Economic Development Commission and the Boone Area Chamber of Commerce revealed a major shortage of after-school care—with 1,672 spots needed in Watauga County.
The need for WYN’s programs has skyrocketed, doubling in just the last year. But with the loss of their longtime facility due to Hurricane Helene, WYN is currently using administrative space as a temporary after-school center.
This campaign will allow WYN to construct an 18,280-square-foot youth center – a first of its kind in the High Country and enhance programming aimed at supporting all ages (elementary through high school).
What is WYN’s mission?
WYN is dedicated to transforming the lives of youth through mentoring, after-school programs, summer camps, and family support services. For 40 years, WYN has provided a safe and nurturing environment where children can learn, grow, and thrive.
Campaign Goals & Impact
What will the campaign fund?
The campaign focuses on two key priorities:
- Expanding Facilities – WYN will build a new 18,280-square-foot youth center, increasing its space by 77%. The facility will include:
- Dedicated after-school wings for elementary and middle school students
- A teen center for after-school, evening, and weekend activities
- A professional counseling center for students and families
- A kitchen for nutrition education
- Spaces for artistic and technological exploration
- Enhancing Mental Health & Youth Support Services – The campaign will also invest in:
- Hiring an on-site mental health counselor
- Expanding after-school programs for underserved elementary and high school youth
- Strengthening WYN’s continuum of care, ensuring youth receive support from kindergarten through high school graduation
How will this campaign impact the community?
The expanded space and programs will allow WYN to serve more children, provide critical mental health support, and ensure that every child has access to academic, social, and emotional resources needed to succeed.
