Barefoot Run for Youth

ImageECR Software Corporation Youth Run a Success!
"Be the change you want to see in the world," a quote by Mahatma Gandhi, is a philosophy that many people try to follow in their lives. Few take it to such an extreme as Western Youth Network's Matt Jenkins, a.k.a. "the barefoot runner." Matt, took it upon himself to raise awareness about the North Carolina budget cuts of the S.O.S. After School and Governor's One-on-One Mentoring programs by running 108.4 miles, most of which he ran without shoes. Matt successfully completed his three week running spree on August 30th with an impressive 53.2 mile run around the western portion of Watauga County. Even more impressive is that Matt returned to work the following Monday morning walking without pain and even more energized than normal due to the run.
The run began as a way to raise awareness about North Carolina state budget cuts that have directly impacted Watauga County youth, but was also able to raise a small, but significant, portion of the funding cuts impacting WYN this fiscal year. All of the staff at the Western Youth Network would like to extend our extreme gratitude to the ECR Software Corporation, located on Howard Street in downtown Boone, who became the run's premier sponsor and thus the run became known as the ECR Software Corporation Youth Run.
The following additional generous community supporters of the ECR Software Corporation Youth Run include: Boone Drug, Inc., Gamma Beta Phi Sorority, Disabled Veterans of America, Chapter 90, Boone Heating and Air, Jeffrey W. Lineberry, DDS, Swiftwick Performance Socks, Austin & Barnes Funeral Home, The Inn at Crestwood, Advertising Design System, Linville Caverns, CiCi's Pizza, Backyard Burger, Gadabouts Catering, Marble Slab, Stick Boy Bread Company, M-Prints, the High Country Conservancy, and numerous individuals who made additional private donations. We would like to thank all of these individuals and companies who helped to make the run possible.
The staff and families of the Western Youth Network would like to thank Matt Jenkins, our barefoot runner, who has generously given his time, commitment, and even the soles of his feet to support the WYN mission to serve families of the High Country. Matt is indeed running to be the change he wants to see.
