In a proclamation by Governor Perdue, The State of North Carolina has officially designated April Alcohol Awareness Month.
The
proclamation states, "alcohol abuse is a major public health problem
that affects Americans from all communities of all ages, races, and
ethnic backgrounds."
In an effort to address some of these
issues locally, WYN has committed to educating young people, among
others, about the dangers of alcohol abuse.
Like the
proclamation, WYN recognizes that young people who begin abusing
alcohol before the age of fifteen are fives times more likely to need
treatment for alcohol addiction in the future.
WYN has
increased initiatives to address concerns through speaking engagements
at Watauga High School and working with the Watauga chapter of SADD,
Students Against Destructive Decisions.
Throughout the month of
April you can also find related articles by WYN Prevention Director,
Ronald Holste and WYN Project Venture Coordinator, Nicole Hiegl in the
weekend editions of the Watauga Democrat.

Sponsor a child for SummerProgram
As the school year
is nearing its end, WYN is preparing for another summer full of outdoor
adventures, experiential education, service learning projects and team
building.
WYN's
Summer Program invites rising 6th-9th graders to participate in alternative types
of learning experiences.
Using Project Venture, a researched based
education technique, WYN teaches the knowledge and skills needed to make
choices for healthier lives and safer communities.
The
average cost to support a middle school youth for our five-week summer program
is $300.00 or $60.00 per week per child.
Youth in Project Venture experience
challenging activities, including rock climbing, rappelling, canoeing, backpack
trips, ropes course, mountain biking, orienteering, as well as service-learning
projects and cultural activities that support their development as capable,
productive members of their community.
If you are
